BLACK COLLAGES

BLACK COLLAGES

The following works are united by their links to mythological female figures, and the personification of the divine feminine creative power, often associated with fertility as well as death.

This collage is inspired by the image of Coaticue, Aztec Goddess, mother of all gods and   symbol of death.

Coatilicue, collage on paper, 20 x 20 cm

The corn goddess is inspired by a myriad of myths concerning agriculture and the cycle of life and death in planting and harvesting crops. There are many such myths in the Americas related to the origin of corn. In one such story from the American Southwest the corn mother goddess Iyatiku plants bits of her heart in the fields, and they later grow into corn.

The Witches Sabbath

This is a group of collages called the Witches Sabbath. Inspired by “The Sorceress” an ancient Greek poem by Theocritus, which recounts the story of Simaethea, a woman who turns to witchcraft after being spurned by her lover, and the Greek Magical Papyri, ancient Greek manuscripts containing magic spells and rituals. These texts came to me by way of a beautiful book by
Octavio Paz on Love and Eroticism:

“Eros is a divinity that merges darkness with light, matter with spirit, sex with idea, the here with the there.”

-Octavio Paz
